FAQ about OWMC

Q
What can I expect during my stay at the Centre?

A
While you are staying at the Centre, we will closely monitor your withdrawal period and we will assist you in planning your next steps.

When you arrive, we will complete a brief initial interview. You will then be able to rest in our observation area while trained staff monitors your safety and the severity of your withdrawal symptoms.

When staff determine that you are well enough to move out of the observation area (after a minimum of 4 hours), you will be able to move into a dorm room and participate in our scheduled activities. We offer acupunture therapy and psycho-educational groups every morning, a recovery video in the afternoon, and an AA or NA meeting in the evening. You will also have the opportunity to speak to our staff about your concerns and needs. Staff will be pleased to assist you with your plans.
Q
How long may I stay?

A
The duration of your stay depends on your personal situation. The average stay is about three to five days. While at the OWMC, you will be able to speak with staff about your discharge planning.
Q
Is it a safe environment?

A
Yes, absolutely; our staff is present at all times. Our priority is the safe provision of our services and the safety of the premises in which they are provided.
Q
Is it a co-ed residence?

A
Yes, the Centre welcomes both women and men aged 16 and up; women and men sleep in separate dorms, but share a common lounge and dining area.
Q
Are there doctors and nurses on site?

A
Since the Centre is a non-medical facility, there are no doctors or nurses on site. However, if the staff feel a client is in need of medical services, medical care will be arranged.  In the case of a medical emergency, an ambulance will be called immediately.
Q
What withdrawal symptoms can I expect to have?

A
Symptoms vary from person to person, and they depend on the quantity, frequency and type of substance used. OWMC staff are able to inform you of the symptoms you may experience after they complete a telephone screening interview with you.
Q
May I take my medication during my stay?

A
Yes, most prescribed medications can be taken here. The medications are stored securely and are provided to the client at the prescribed times. Please contact the OWMC with any questions about specific prescribed medications or to discuss tapering regimes.
Q
Can my family and friends come visit me?

A
Out of respect for the confidentiality and privacy of other clients staying at the OWMC, visitors are not permitted during your stay. However, you may make calls and receive phone messages while you are here.
Q
Will you help me get to a treatment centre?

A
While at the OWMC, you will have the opportunity to have an assessment completed. If you are interested in exploring further options, we will then be available to assist you with treatment planning and refer you to resources that suit your individual needs.  There are often waiting lists to enter residential treatment centres.
Q
Is my information confidential?

A
Yes, we respect our clients’ confidentiality. We share your personal information only if there are reasons to believe you are in danger.
Q
How much will it cost me to stay at the Centre?

A
There is no cost.
