Whenever a potential client or a friend contacts the Ottawa Withdrawal Management Centre (OWMC), a team of bilingual professionals is ready to help.

 

We provide services to men and women 16 years of age and older, who are actively using substances or are in an acute state of drug and/or alcohol withdrawal and are determined to be appropriate for safe withdrawal in a non-medical setting.

 

Withdrawal management includes access to a safe, compassionate and understanding environment during the withdrawal period, help in determining potential withdrawal symptoms, support in completing the withdrawal process, help in identifying the needs and planning the client’s personalized care and discharge, which includes all appropriate medical referrals.

Family members, friends, employers, colleagues and the police may direct someone to the Centre without medical referrals. Clients may refer themselves to the Centre.

As part of the selection process, a client is asked to call the Centre before admission so the staff may screen for potential medical risks. The pre-admission questions help determine the client’s recent substance use, the possibility of a safe withdrawal in a non-medical environment and what the client can expect during their stay, the ultimate objective being the security of our clients and staff. Each client is evaluated as to his or her withdrawal symptoms and will be observed on an individual basis.

The preliminary evaluation helps determine the client’s needs. He or she spends a minimum of four hours or more under observation before moving to a bed in the program phase for a period of four or five days as required.

The staff provides an individualized, holistic treatment for each client and refers him or her to the appropriate resources once their withdrawal period is ended.

The Centre offers help to addicts with their withdrawal, but does not offer long term substance use treatment.
